One of the most common criticisms of atheism is that it lacks a basis for objective moral values, leading the atheist to a position of moral skepticism or nihilism. Such critics have attempted to argue that only a god or gods can offer a meta-ethical basis for morality, and that because morality is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, it is rational for one to accept theism over atheism.
