According to this report from Sam Seder of Majority.FM, Hot and Crusty, a New York City coffeeshop and diner chain owned by Mark Sampson, a wealthy hedge fund manager, was closed after its employees attempted to form a union to protest low pay and atrocious working conditions. Instead of going quietly into the night, the workers decided to attend Occupy Wall Street meetings, form an independent union, occupy the now-closed restaurant, open it back up, and picket outside for 12 hours each day. After doing this for a week, Hot and Crusty’s owner finally caved, re-opening the shop and accepting the workers’ union.
This is a testament to the power of workers. Don’t listen to those who say we are powerless . . . together, we can bring about real change! Occupy, organize, unionize!
